大学生のころ、語彙を制限することでシンプルさを狙う (のかな?) オクデンの Basic English に一時期興味を持ったが、一語で済むものでもわざわざ数語 (基本単語+前置詞等) で表現しなければならないのがなんとなく引っかかった。この本での Plain English は似ていながらちょっと方向性が異なるようだ。

以下、Plain English 鉄則10ヵ条を引用。
1. Prefer the short word to the long.
  長い単語より短い単語を。
2. Prefer the familiar word to the fancy.
  カッコいい凝った単語より、慣れ親しんだ単語を。
3. Prefer the specific word to the abstract.
  抽象的な単語より、具体的なものを。
4. Use no more words than necessary to make your meaning clear.
  よけいな単語は使わない。
5. Use the active voice whenever possible.
  できるだけ能動態を使う。
6. Use verbs. Put verbs in action.
  動詞を生かす。
7. When possible, express even a negative in positive form.
  できるだけ否定形を避ける。
8. Put one piece of information in one sentence.
  ひとつの文にはひとつの情報を。
9. Put out line first and then details or specifics.
  まず概論を述べてから、詳細に入る。
10. State cause and effect.
  原因・結果をはっきり述べる。
paraphrase の話 (4 章) は、なるほど、と思うものの独学は無理だな。本の後半は基本単語の解説。
